growing first time

first time grower
2 freinds of mine and i would do it in his closet
parents are cool with it
just a plant for each of us- it would be a real small operation the first time
what would we need specificly what type of light and can it be bought easily in a hardware store?
bare min. just to see if we could do it
and is miracle grow any good or just good dirt?
plzz just give me a idea here
